Career change?

When i got this job i was drunk on information theory. That's my excuse and i'm sticking to it. I wasn't prepared for office politics, and i wasn't prepared for ineffectual management. I wanted to work in an academic library because i liked school. I liked research and projects and big budgets. I liked the library i worked in at school and i liked the librarians i worked with. I wanted to be close to an intellectual hub; I wanted to be part of one. But this is just not working for me. The problem with working in an academic institution is the institution part. We don't have a say in curriculum development, we don't have a say in building repairs, we don't get adequate IT support, and the teaching faculty would think nothing of tossing us out with all those antiquated book things that are just sitting in here taking up space. They resent us taking up valuable faculty slots and they don't care to recognize how much support we give their students. Besides which, academic libraries are not the bastions of intellectual freedom i had hoped. Granted, maybe it's just this library... But something tells me i should try public libraries. The pay isn't as good, there's even less stability, and on the libraryworld ladder they're the bottom rung... But maybe if i work at a public library i can keep my self respect.
